Acelleron Launches ”Great Place to Pump” Designation

Acelleron, a health and wellness company, announces the launch of Great Place to Pump, a prestigious designation now available to employers. Great Place to Pump is an annual designation recognizing breastfeeding and pumping-friendly workplaces based on the successful establishment of policies, education, support, and accommodations for breastfeeding employees.

“We are ecstatic to recognize employers that value and support the strength and commitment of breastfeeding women in the workplace,” said Suzanne Vecchi, director of operations for Acelleron. “Providing a great place to pump for moms will not only support their personal goals but will also help retain them as valuable employees and attract great talent to the organization.”

Companies that become a Great Place to Pump will receive a certificate of designation, as well as a marketing toolkit, to help share this remarkable achievement with their company and the public.

According to the CDC 2018 Breastfeeding Report Card, over 80% of American mothers breastfeed their babies. Women comprise nearly half of the U.S. labor force and, for new mothers, the thought of returning to work and breastfeeding can be challenging. Breastfeeding mothers who are away from their babies need to express milk two to three times during an eight-hour workday to maintain their milk supply and avoid health complications. Employer support and accommodations for breastfeeding moms returning to work is crucial for this transition and should be recognized.

Great Place to Pump applications are now being accepted at greatplacetopump.com. Organizations will be notified of the next steps upon submission.

If you have questions regarding the Great Place to Pump designation, or the overall application process, please contact Acelleron at (877) 932-6327 or email wellness@acelleron.com.

  • Summer Fashion Trends 2019

    Summer Fashion Trends 2019

“Summertiiiime, and the fashion’s easy.” (That’s how that one goes, right?) Anyway, warmer weather is finally here, which means it’s time for your light and airy clothes to come out of hibernation and into the sunshine. Getting ready in the morning—especially with little ones around—can feel like a chore, and there’s nothing better than just throwing on a cute dress or jumpsuit, slipping into a pair of wedges (yes, they’re officially back!), topping it all off with a straw hat, and calling your outfit complete. Here, we’re rounding up some of our favorite mom-friendly fashion trends for summer 2019 that will make getting dressed feel like a walk on the beach.

    The Jumpsuit

Whether you’re headed out the door to run some errands, meet up with friends, or drop the kiddos off at camp or daycare on your way into the office, a jumpsuit is always a great choice. Opt for one made of a breathable fabric like linen to stay comfortably cool from morning to night.

    The Wedge

Ladies, our tried-and-true heeled friend is back and hopefully, here to stay. Wedges (literally) elevate your look while still being kind to your feet. And, this is especially important if you are chasing after the kiddos!

    The Straw Hat

This look comes to us straight off the runway and is a stylish and protective option for the sunniest of dog days.

When it comes to women’s fashion trends for summer 2019, easy breezy is the name of the game. As a mom, it can sometimes feel like everyone else’s needs come before your own, but it’s important to take care of yourself, too. Though it may seem simple, an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable will help set the tone for the day, and with easy-to-wear options, it takes the stress out of getting ready.

That’s a lot of diapers (2,457 in the first year, in fact)! It’s important to stock up and save where you can.

  • Maximizing Milk Production

    Maximizing Milk Production

It’s common for nursing mothers to worry whether their babies are getting enough nutrients to grow healthy and strong. Since it’s impossible to measure how much breast milk your little one is taking in, any change in your baby’s nursing habits or how your body feels can cause unnecessary alarm. Growth spurts, fussy behavior, and your body adapting to your baby’s needs can all affect how a baby nurses and are all absolutely normal.

If you’re concerned that your milk supply is low or wish you could increase the amount of milk you are pumping, there are some tricks you can try to increase milk production. Taking care of yourself and spending quality time with your new baby are two of the most important ways to enhance milk production. Many moms find The Breastfeeding Mother’s Guide to Making More Milk by Diana West to be a great resource. If you believe that you’re producing an inadequate milk supply, consult with your doctor or a lactation consultant to see if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.

    Supply and Demand

Your body is incredibly smart and learns the frequency and amount of milk that is taken from the body (either by your baby or breast pump). Essentially, the more milk that is removed from the breasts, the more milk the breasts will produce. Adding in an extra pumping session in the morning or evening can help stimulate greater milk production. If your breasts still feel full after breastfeeding, you can either hand express or pump to soften the breasts.

    The Importance of the Pump

A decreased pumping output oftentimes has nothing to do with the body’s ability to produce milk, but rather, the breast pump itself. If your pump isn’t hospital grade or doesn’t meet high quality standards, it may be time for a new pump. Check all of the parts of your breast pump to ensure it is in excellent working order and take a look at the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure you’re using the pump correctly.

Sore nipples or damaged breast tissue are signs that the breast shields/flanges don’t fit. For the breast pump to work most efficiently and to prevent further pain, it’s imperative to have the right size breast shields. Even if you are not experiencing pain, low milk production can be a sign that the flanges you are using do not properly fit. Try a size up or down to see if you are able to pump more milk, but be sure to measure your flange size first!

    Baby’s Behaviors

Your baby may love his or her pacifier, but it may be keeping your baby from nursing. Avoid pacifiers and bottles as much as possible to encourage sucking needs be met at the breasts. If your baby is taking in any nutrients beyond breastmilk such as water or formula, your baby may not want to nurse frequently, which can have a serious impact on levels of milk production. Try decreasing anything in your baby’s diet that isn’t breastmilk to encourage more nursing.

    Taking Care of Mom

If you’ve been feeling sick or stressed, your milk production may decrease. Your body has been through a lot recently and nursing isn’t always easy, so it’s important to take time to relax. Sleep when your baby sleeps and be sure to get all of the nutrients that you need. Keep snacks and water bottles around, or even make yourself a care basket filled with granola bars, water, books, and magazines. Be sure to stay hydrated, but you don’t need to overdo it on the liquids as drinking extra water to increase milk supply is a myth. Take care of yourself to take care of your baby.

By adding in an extra pumping or nursing session a day, ensuring your breast pump fits and is in good condition, reducing the time your baby has with a pacifier, and taking a little more time for yourself, you may find that your milk production will increase. If your milk supply is still inadequate,  you should consult a doctor or lactation consultant. Do what is best for you and your baby to ensure health and happiness. Remember that you and your baby have a special bond that is not dependent on the amount of milk you produce.

  • Top Ten Strollers

    Top Ten Strollers

Similar to buying a car, there’s a lot to consider when purchasing a stroller. The weight, size, style, wheels, storage, and price are all pieces that need to be evaluated. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the number of options out there, so before diving into the details of each stroller, think about your lifestyle and budget. If you live in the city, you may want a lighter stroller that can easily navigate through narrow spaces and turn on a dime. But, if you’re someone who is regularly adventuring in the woods, you’ll want a sturdier stroller with all-terrain wheels.

It’s easy to get hung-up on the details of strollers such as whether or not it has a cup holder or comes with a bug protector, but as long as you get a stroller you like, you can always add these accessories later to make your stroller exactly what you and your newborn need.

If you’re unsure where to even begin looking for a stroller, check out our top ten choices below. With a variety of prices and features, you can start creating a list of features and the type of stroller that will fit your family’s needs (and maybe you’ll even see a perfect stroller in the list!).

    Baby Jogger City Mini GT

    Price: $359.99 $251.99

Though “Jogger” is in the name, this is not a jogging stroller. However, it is an incredibly versatile, all-purpose stroller that folds up in a way that seems like magic. Holding kids up to 65 pounds, this stroller can be used well beyond toddlerhood. The all-terrain wheels allow for a comfortable ride, whether over sidewalk cracks or through grassy parks. But, the best feature of the stroller is the compactness and ease in which it folds. This makes travel and storage simple, so you won’t be fumbling around with a cumbersome stroller when you have more important things to do.

    UPPAbaby Vista

    Price: $899.99

While this stroller is on the pricier side, the UPPAbaby Vista is one of the most highly rated strollers for a reason. The stroller comes with a bassinet for newborns, front- or parent-facing toddler seat (that also reclines), and even a ride along board for the big kids on the back. This makes the Vista one of the best strollers for growing families.

    BOB Revolution PRO

    Price: $499.99

An adjustable suspension system and hand brakes make this jogging stroller the perfect option for adventurous families. The BOB Revolution PRO folds up more compactly than the standard jogging stroller and the wheels can be switched out to fit your needs. If you know you’ll be jogging or consistently going “off-road,” then the Revolution PRO is your best bet for providing a smooth and comfortable ride for baby.

    Graco Modes Click Connect Stroller

    Price: $229.99 $159.99

The Graco Modes Click Connect Stroller is the best all-purpose stroller you can find for its price. The stroller seat reclines flat meaning there is no need to install a bassinet for your newborn. Purchase as a bundle with the Click Connect Infant Car Seat to make things extra efficient as the car seat clicks right into the stroller’s frame. Besides being a more budget-friendly option, the Modes Stroller also provides a ton of storage, so the whole family can bring along what they need.

    Bugaboo Cameleon 3 Plus

    Price: $999

If you’re looking for a stroller that offers incredible functionality combined with beautiful style, the Bugaboo Cameleon 3 Plus is it. This durable stroller can be used all year long in any climate as two-wheel positions allow for smooth rides over sand or snow. If you’re particular about style, Bugaboo allows the option to customize the stroller, so you really can have it all.

    Thule Urban Glide 2

    Price: $479.95

Though classified as a jogging stroller, the Thule Urban Glide 2 could certainly be used as an everyday stroller due to its smaller size and compact fold (as compared to other jogging strollers). The universal car seat adapter fits most popular infant car seat brands, so there’s no need to compromise on the car seat or the stroller. The Thule Urban Glide 2 also comes with lots of storage, including a large, zippered compartment to keep everything together during bumpy rides.

    Evenflo Pivot Xpand

    Price: $334.99

This convertible stroller can turn from a single to a double stroller with no extra parts. The Evenflo Pivot Xpand has an impressive amount of storage including an extra-large storage basket that can be accessed from the front or the back of the stroller (and is over two feet long). With a car seat included, this stroller is ready straight out of the box and can hold everything you need (including your toddler, newborn, and extra-large coffee).

    NUNA MIXX

    Price: $649.95

The Nuna MIXX is the ultimate stroller for snoozing. The seat has five reclining positions so you can position it flat to let your little one nap comfortably while you’re on the go. The toddler seat faces forward or towards the rear and the large canopy expands to provide sun protection of UPF 50+.

    Doona Combo

    Price: $499

When it comes to traveling around the city, strapping a car seat into a taxi is something parents have always found challenging or have been unwilling to even attempt. Doona strives to combat this with the creation of their combo stroller which quickly turns a car seat into a stroller and vice versa. Though a little heavier than other versatile strollers, the Doona Combo is the perfect stroller for navigating busy streets, jumping on public transportation, and popping in and out of vehicles to keep your little one safe.

    Chicco Bravo Primo

    Price: $349.99

Chicco products are built to last for years and offer several options to ensure a perfect fit from newborn through toddlerhood. The Chicco Bravo Primo has everything an all-purpose stroller needs, without extra complicated bells and whistles. From simple assembly to the one-handed fold, this stroller is a no-fuss solution for extra busy parents.

With so many options, choosing a stroller can feel like an overwhelming decision. Some families find that one all-purpose stroller fits their needs, while others may purchase two strollers (or more!) to ensure everything is covered. Lighter, smaller strollers are great for navigating through busy areas and narrow turns, while heftier strollers are better for tough terrain.

Ask your local store to test-drive a few strollers as you may find some functionality and maneuverability feels more comfortable to you. With so many great stroller options out there, you’re bound to find one that makes both you and your little one happy.

  • Preparing for the First Week Home with Your Newborn

Preparing for the First Week Home with Your Newborn

Once you come home with your little one, you’re going to be exhausted from the labor and delivery process. We recommend planning ahead so the first week home is as easy as possible.

Keep in mind, there will be things that may be useful down the road. For now, focus on what you absolutely need for these initial seven days.

    For Transporting Baby:

You’ll need a car seat to leave the hospital, of course. As well, unless the weather is really inclement, you may enjoy taking the baby out for short strolls. You can also consider a travel system that allows you to click the car seat into the stroller without having to remove baby from the car seat.

    For Changing Baby:

Ever heard the phrase “little stinker?” Prepare yourself for changing lots of stinky diapers by arming yourself with the following:

    For Feeding Baby:

Something you’ll be doing even more than changing diapers is feeding your newborn. On average, you will be providing your baby with milk every two to three hours. To make this as comfortable as possible for both you and your little one, we recommend having these items:

    • 1-2 nursing pillows
    • Soft and absorbent bibs and burp cloths
    • Ice packs for soothing your breasts
    • Cream for potentially sore/cracked nipples
    • Breast pads
    • Access to a lactation consultant for additional support

For the healthy term baby, pumping is not recommended until breastfeeding/milk supply is well established, or there is a medical indication to do so. But if you are pumping during this first week, we recommend being prepared with these additional items:

    For Cleaning Baby:

A daily bath won’t be needed for a while. In fact, until the umbilical stump heals (typically between one and four weeks after birth), the baby will only be able to take a sponge bath. To help baby maintain her body temperature, wash her face, head, and hair while she is still wrapped up. Then move on to her body, uncovering one arm at a time, then the trunk of the body (see below for the umbilical cord) and back, her legs and feet, and finally her diaper area.

For the umbilical cord, dip a cotton swab in warm water, squeezing the tip to remove excess water. Gently clean around the base of the cord and then the surrounding skin. Hold the stump with a clean absorbent cloth to dry it completely. The umbilical cord must remain clean and dry until it falls off naturally.

    • Several soft clean cotton hand cloths
    • Cotton swabs

    For Dressing Baby:

For the first week with your newborn, the primary focus should be comfort! Pro-tip: don’t buy a lot of newborn sized clothing – babies grow quickly and those newborn sized items won’t fit for very long!

    For Sleeping Baby:

In addition to your crib, you’ll need a few additional bedding supplies. Below are important for ensuring that your baby sleeps safely and soundly.

Getting ready for the first week is a big deal. By focusing on just these items, you can take a deep breath and feel better prepared for the big day!

  • How to Manage Sleepless Nights – Parenting as a Team

How to Manage Sleepless Nights – Parenting as a Team

After bath-time is over, lullabies have been sung, and everyone has said “goodnight Moon,” it’s time for some well-deserved sleep. Just as you’re settling in to bed next to your already sleeping partner, your baby (who was sleeping soundly just moments before) begins crying. The early newborn nights are challenging, and the sleepless nights can take a big toll on the whole family, especially when there isn’t a clear plan in place for what happens next.

    We’ve compiled our best tips.

Take Turns with the Night Shift

Establish an alternating pattern for which parent will get the night shift and write down the agreed schedule on your calendar. For example, one of you is responsible for Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, while the other person is responsible for Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. When on call, you are responsible for feeding, changing, and getting the baby back to sleep for that night. This strategy will allow the other person to sleep through the night since he/she will not be on call. The premise here is that it is easier to get through a night of limited/no sleep if you know the next night will be your turn to sleep. Be aware that if you are nursing, you may need to adapt this plan in the early weeks. It’s important to note that for the healthy term baby, pumping is not recommended until the breastfeeding/milk supply is well established, or there is a medical indication to do so – usually, this is around 3 to 4 weeks post birth. In this scenario, we recommend that on mom’s day “off” dad will get baby from their crib and bring him/her to mom, allowing her to nurse in bed. Once baby is done nursing, dad can change baby, rock him/her to sleep, and put the little one back into their crib. When mom’s milk supply is established, dad should be able to feed baby with expressed milk that mom has pumped before going to bed. Parents who do this swear by the approach.

    Split the Night into Shifts

Another approach is to split the night into two shifts One parent takes the first few hours, and the second parent takes the later hours. For example, the early parent takes care of all the wake-ups that occur from 9 PM to 2 AM. The second parent takes wake ups calls from 2 AM to 7 AM. The schedule will vary based on your schedule, and you might decide to switch off who gets the early vs the late shift. The main point is that each parent is guaranteed some number of hours when he/she will get some quality sleeping.

With both options assigning shifts, it’s important to be as specific as possible when devising the schedule. It’s also important to work these decisions before the baby arrives, as it can be very difficult to make calm, rational decisions when one or both parents are sleep-deprived.

    Sleep When You Can

Take a nap when your baby falls asleep. It might feel like there is an endless list of things to do, but taking care of yourself IS a priority. Getting those extra zzz’s will allow you to be more productive and present, so set the chores aside when your little one falls asleep and take that much-needed rest.

When both you and your partner are home, take turns spending one-on-one time with your baby so that one of you can get some alone time. While your partner reads to your baby, go to a separate room in the house and silence your phone. Sleep, read, watch TV, or do whatever you need to re-energize. For extreme luxury, consider investing in noise cancelling headphones to truly escape any chaos.

Communicate Openly and Be Easy on Each Other

Schedules and priorities shift with a newborn, and it can feel like you and your partner aren’t on the same page. Be open about how you’re feeling and discuss decisions frequently with each other. Having a baby is a significant event and you need to know that you and your partner can lean on each other for support. Everyone forgets things and makes mistakes, so be easy on each other. When you’re sleep-deprived or just need a break, politely ask your partner if he/she can take the baby for an hour so that you can rest. Be willing to make compromises and allow for space and time for your partner to rest as well.

    Accept Help

Accepting help can be one of the hardest things to do, but trust that people want to help you and spend time with your newborn. Your friends and family will find joy in helping with chores as they get to be a part of the beginning of your newborn’s life. Learn to be a flexible and allow grandparents some one-on-one time with your baby so that you and your partner can sleep.

Consider hiring a babysitter or night nanny to help you get some extra rest. Relax knowing your newborn is in the hands of a professional, while you and your partner can both get the sleep you desperately need.

Whether this is your first or your fourth child, getting through those newborn sleepless nights is difficult for every parent. Trust that you and your partner are doing everything you can for each other and for your newborn. Ask for help and support from your partner, family, or friends when you need it, and be sure to make sleep a priority, as this will benefit both you and your baby.

  • Tips for Breastfeeding

    Tips for Breastfeeding

Your new baby is precious! Her little fingers wrap around just one of yours, and tiny toes fit into impossibly small socks and shoes. It’s hard to imagine she’ll ever grow up. You would do anything for your baby and, for many moms, this will include breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is a great way to bond with your baby and provide all of the nutrients your new one needs, but you might encounter some challenges along the way. Every mom has her own experience with breastfeeding, and it may take some time and patience to figure out what works best for you and your baby. If you are struggling with breastfeeding, you are not alone. Try these tips and tricks that have worked for other moms and let us know how they work for you!

    Stay Hydrated

Moms who are breastfeeding may notice they are thirstier while lactating, and it is important to stay hydrated. While the notion that you must consume more water than the recommended daily amount for adults in order to make up for your additional milk production is a myth, it is important to listen to your body’s signals – drink when you feel thirsty. We recommend carrying a water bottle around with you, or placing full water bottles around the house, especially when you are breastfeeding. Having water bottles within reach will ensure you stay hydrated.

    Relax and Get Comfortable

It’s important to relax as best you can before and during breastfeeding as this will lead to a better overall experience for you and your baby. In fact, when you are able to relax during breastfeeding, your body is more likely to release oxytocin, which will initiate a letdown. Choose a comfortable chair with armrests and use pillows and blankets to support your body. Support heavy breasts with your hands or a rolled-up towel, if needed and take long, deep breaths.

For even more comfort, create a nursing station for yourself including water, snacks, magazines, books, the remote to the T.V., burp cloths, or anything else that will help you relax even further. Or, consider turning your smart speaker onto some soothing sounds or classic music.

    Alternate Nursing Positions

Changing positions can decrease the risk of clogged milk ducts and help to prevent nipple soreness. There are many nursing positions to try (such as the cradle hold, the cross-cradle hold, the football hold, and more), and you may find some work better for you and your baby than others. Whichever position you choose, it’s important that your baby be well-supported so that he or she feels safe and you both feel comfortable when breastfeeding.

Get the Most Out of Your Breast Pump

When you use your breast pump, many of the same rules apply. Get in a comfortable position and relax. Looking at a picture or video of your baby will help initiate a letdown. When you’re using your breast pump, let comfort be your guide. If something hurts or feels uncomfortable, make some adjustments.

Two common mistakes are incorrect flange size or improper suction. Make sure you are using the right flange (also called a breast shield) size for your body. Each breast pump manufacturer sells a range of accessories to increase comfort and maximize your milk output. For example, Medela sells the PersonalFit Breast Shields while Ardo sells Breast Flanges in a range of sizes.

Check the settings on your breast pump to make sure you have right suction and speed levels. It is tempting to think that faster speed and higher suction will result in more expressed milk, but in many cases, higher/faster settings are just leading to more pain. Find the settings that best mimic your baby and you’ll be rewarded with a more comfortable experience and a higher volume of milk.

  • Preparing Your Children For a Sibling

Preparing Your Children For a Sibling

When your first child was born, all of the attention was on your sweet newborn. With no other child competing for your affection, you were able to focus on your baby’s needs and learned tactics to maneuver through the challenges that came with being a new parent. Now, with another baby on the way, it’s time to prepare the family for the new baby. Your children are about to become older siblings to a new brother or sister, and this can be a big responsibility for them.

A new sibling can be very exciting for children. There’s the possibility of having a new playmate and being the “big kid” in the family. However, when the novelty of a new baby wears off, older siblings may become clingy to parents and jealous of the attention that their little sibling receives.

There’s no way to predict exactly how a child will act when there’s a new baby, so it’s recommended to prepare the older siblings as best as you can. Communicate openly and in age-appropriate ways so that your children are as ready as they can be for their roles as big brothers or sisters.

    Read a Book Together

Reading is a great bonding activity for parents and children and can help communicate what it is like to be an older sibling. A book about a new baby brother or sister can help children begin to understand what they can expect with a new baby in the home. The story and lessons can also aid in getting the conversation started with your child. Some favorite books are:

Build the Connection Between Your Child and Baby

By involving your children in the preparation of the arrival of your new one (and allowing them to be “big helpers” as a big sister or big brother), they will feel more connected to their new sister or brother. Allow the kids to help paint the baby’s room, pick out clothes, or come to the doctor with you to hear the baby’s heartbeat. Play pretend with a baby doll so that your child can practice holding and interacting with a baby. One of the best ways to foster a personal connection with the baby is to have your child pick out a toy or other gift that your little one can give to the baby when he or she arrives. (Be sure to have a gift ready for the older sibling from the baby as well!)

Make All Big Changes Before Baby Arrives

There are going to be a lot of significant changes with the arrival of your new baby, so if there are any planned transitions coming up, do them now. If your child is ready to be potty-trained, weaned off a binky, or transitioned to a big-kid bed, it’s best to start the process before the baby arrives, for the comfort of your child (and your sanity).

Remind Your Child About His/Her Importance

Your child’s life is about to change and that can be scary and confusing. It’s important to remind children that by being who they are, they’re an extremely important part of the family. Praise your children for their unique, positive qualities and point out their contributions so that they can understand their value. Remark how each person in the family contributes something special and how important it is to have each person as a part of the family.

While you and your partner are preparing for the new baby, it’s important to remember that your older children’s lives are about to change as well. If your children are old enough to understand, speak to them about the reality of a new baby (crying, feeding, attention), and be sure to include the exciting parts of having a new sibling as well. The more you allow your children to be involved in preparing for the arrival of the new baby, and the more you communicate with them about the big changes, the more prepared they will be as incredible older brothers and sisters.

  • Decorating Your Nursery

    Decorating Your Nursery

Your little bundle of joy is almost here! If you’re not feeling the onset of nesting yet, it will hit soon. Arm yourself with the right knowledge on how to decorate your nursery to avoid overdoing the décor, creating an inefficient layout, or painting your nursery’s walls with a color that doesn’t connect with your baby’s items.

    Where Do I Start?

You may be asking yourself: where do I even start with decorating? From furniture, to color/themes, to layout, creating your dream nursery can seem like a tall task. However, if you prioritize the order of your to-do list, you will be rewarded with a great end result.

    1. Look for Inspiration: Find inspiration in photographs/art, outfits, rooms, and landscapes to see what color palettes you’re pulled to. Create a Pinterest or cut-and-paste mood board, focusing on broad concepts such as color, style, and theme to narrow down your design choices. As you move forward, reference your mood board to remain consistent and on theme with your design and decoration.
    2. Purchase Major Furniture: When starting to shop for furniture, stick to the bigger items: your crib (make sure it fits CPSC safety standards), dresser/changing table, and glider for nursing. Test out having the furniture setup in different arrangements within the room to get a visualization of how the space will look certain ways. This will help you decide which layout you prefer best for both aesthetics and functionality. The design you choose will help you decide your focal point, what bedding to buy, accent choices, and more.
    3. Pick Your Focal Point: Your focal point will serve as the subject and anchor of your nursery’s design. Parents typically choose to have their crib as the focal point, since there are many ways to pull in attention, such as with bedding, the color of the crib, or a bed skirt for a traditional feel. However, you can make any item your focal point. Whether you want to add a fun rug, a trendy nursing chair, or a pop of color with your dresser/changing table, that’s up to you and your designer eye!
    4. Choose Décor: You have your color palette/theme, your major furniture pieces, and your focal point, now it’s time for the fun part: décor. Stick to the 60-30-10 rule with your color palette, having one primary color, and two accent colors. Feature your color palette throughout the room with wall decals, prints, pillows, throws, and any other decorative items you feel fit your room’s vibe.
    5. Pick Your Paint or Wallpaper: It’s time for the finishing touch- the walls! Whether you choose to paint your walls or cover them with wallpaper, make sure your nursery’s walls are washable. If you are painting your walls, use a good quality, VOC-free paint and ensure the room has adequate ventilation. You are going to want to air the room as long as possible so all potentially harmful air toxins can escape.

    Picking Your Wall Color:

When you enter a paint store or search for wallpaper, you are met with what seems like millions of options, and it can be overwhelming. Narrowing in on the color and how you think would best fit your nursery is essential. Look to your bedding, rug, or wall art to set the precedent for the color(s) of the wall.

Consider the size of the space and where natural light hits when covering your walls. Bolder colors are a great option for an accent wall, dark colors are useful when applied to a single wall to add depth, and lighter colors are a go-to for making the room appear bigger and brighter. Remember to start small when painting. Use swatches to ensure you like how the color appears when dry, as well as throughout different times of the day when lighting may hit it differently.

Think long-term when choosing your color; painting/covering your walls is a timely and pricey task. A sophisticated color scheme is a great choice if you expect to stick with this color as your child grows up. Here are some different paths you can take with the coloring of your room:

    • Current and Trendy: Navy and coral, a cool minty green, or a rich, neutral shade with accent walls are popular choices for nurseries nowadays.
    • Classic and Traditional: Consider pinks and purples for a girly vibe, and blues and greens for a boyish vibe. If your baby’s gender is unknown, yellow and gray are popular gender-neutral picks.
    • All-inclusive: Don’t feel like your color(s)/theme has to fit a gender stereotype, popular colors nowadays, no matter the gender, include (but are not limited to): grassy green, soft neutral pink, eggshell blue, violet-gray, and mellow yellow.

    Remember: Functionality is Key

Whether your baby’s room is large or small, you’re going to be using every bit of space possible. It’s important to incorporate functional storage to avoid clutter. To maximize storage, purchase furniture pieces with built in drawers or cabinets, such as a crib with a trundle. Also, think vertically: use walls for shelving. Many parents find that incorporating wall-mounted shelves in safe locations around the room can help maximize storage and double as fun decoration. We recommend never installing shelves above areas where baby will be, such as the changing table or the crib, in order to keep baby safe from a potential falling item.

When it comes to the layout of your room, many parents’ number one tip is to make sure anything and everything you may need is within easy reach. Whether you’re at your changing table and need wipes, or you’re at your nursing chair and need a burp cloth, make sure the items you need are well stocked and located closely, according to the area’s typical use. For the changing table, we recommend having a hamper and diaper pail on either side, stocking your hanging shelf or top drawer with diapers, wipes, lotion, and other changing needs, and having toys nearby to keep baby entertained while you’re changing his/her diaper. Near your nursing chair, have a small nightstand or end table to place your breastfeeding needs, such as water for yourself, a burp cloth for baby, and anything else you may need to easily reach for.

Remember, decorating your nursery should be fun! There’s absolutely no pressure to have the perfect room for your baby. Decorate the nursery how you want it; realistically, your baby won’t care, only you will. You’re going to be spending a lot of time in this space, so make sure it’s an atmosphere you enjoy and feel comfortable and relaxed in.

  • Top Ten Must-Do’s Before Baby Arrives

Top Ten Must-Do’s Before Baby Arrives

Having a baby on the way is exciting, but it can have you wondering how your life is about to change and what you need to do to prepare for your newborn. With so many books, articles, and experts giving advice about everything that needs to be done before the baby arrives, it can be overwhelming.  As long as you complete these ten must-do’s, you’ll make things easier for yourself and family when your much-anticipated baby finally comes home.

    1. Make a Clear Plan for the Kids

If you already have children, you’ll want to be sure that they’re being looked after while you’re in the hospital. If you feel comfortable doing so, ask a family member or friend to stay in your home with your children. If your children will be staying at a neighbor’s home, friend’s house, or somewhere other than their own home, make sure to have clothing, toiletries, and any overnight essentials packed in advance. (You could even pack a surprise toy or snack to make them feel extra special.) Make sure you communicate with your children and let them know that they will be staying with someone for a short time, so that they are not surprised and act out.

    2. Set a Plan for the Pets

If someone will be staying at your home while you’re in the hospital, be sure to leave them with clear instructions on how to care for your pets. Depending on the needs of the pet, you may be able to ask a neighbor or friend to visit your home to play with, walk, or feed your pet. Otherwise, be sure to find a person or kennel that you trust and provide instructions on caring for your beloved pets in advance. You may even ask that the pet be taken care of for a few extra days, so that you and your newborn can settle in before introducing your pets to the new baby.

    3. Pick a Pediatrician

Your baby’s pediatrician will play an important role over the coming years of your baby’s development. Make sure you are spending the time to research your options. Ask for recommendations from family and friends, and check out reviews of pediatricians on Healthgrades and Vitals. Schedule an introductory meeting with the pediatricians you are considering and feel comfortable asking questions. Avoid any pediatrician who is dismissive or with whom you have bad chemistry. Selecting a good pediatrician before the baby is born will pay dividends later.

    4. Stock the Pantry and Freezer

The more you can do in advance, the less you’ll have to worry about when the baby comes home. Food is something you will certainly need, but preparing a gourmet dinner may be out of the question for a period of time. To make things easier, get your food delivered by AmazonFresh and start preparing frozen meals 3-4 weeks in advance of the expected due date. Search Pinterest for inspiration and look for recipes of meals that reheat easily such as lasagna, fajitas, and casseroles. Load up the pantry with easy snacks such as granola bars and crackers, and foods that are simple to prepare such as canned soup and cereal. You may even find that family and friends will want to help by bringing meals over for you and your family, and (as long as they are decent cooks) you should absolutely accept.

    5. Set Up Cleaning Services

Once your baby comes home, you’re not going to have the time or energy you might think you were going to have to do household chores. Setting up a temporary cleaning service to help around the house will take a heavy burden off of you and allow you to spend valuable time with your precious new baby, without needing to worry about everything that needs to get done. With a stockpile of laundry, dishes, and general cleaning, you will be glad to have someone help out.

    6. Look into Meal Delivery Services

Even if you stocked up the pantry and hired a cleaning service to help around the house, you may find yourself needing a little something more than that granola bar for dinner. Even if you typically love to cook, with a new baby, you’ll be glad to take a break from it for a while. Subscribing to a meal delivery service will ensure that you are able to get nutritious meals on the table. You won’t need to worry about grocery shopping and can spend more time focusing on you and your baby’s needs. Many meal delivery services such as HelloFresh, Sun Basket, Plated, and Martha & Marley Spoon, offer meal options that take 30 minutes or less to prepare.

    7. Get the Carpets Cleaned

When is the last time you had your carpets cleaned? If it wasn’t in the last 12 months, it’s time to get a professional in to remove the dangerous particles that could be embedded in the carpet fibers. Your little one is going to roll around and eventually crawl on those carpets, so it’s best to have freshly cleaned carpets for his or her arrival home. (You’ll also feel more comfortable if you place your baby on a soothing mat on freshly cleaned carpet.)

    8. Do a Test Run to the Hospital

When you start to go into labor, you will want to know exactly where to go and what to do. Figure out how you will get to the hospital, the amount of time it will take to get there, and you may even want to look-up a backup route in case of unexpected traffic or construction that could cause delays. When you get to the hospital, be sure to understand exactly where you need to go, including parking and where you will be admitted (building, floor, etc.). Understand the check-in procedure as best as you can in advance so that there are no questions or delays when the baby is ready.

    9. Have the Car Ready

Having your car in tip-top shape, loaded with essentials, is going to make your life a lot easier when the baby arrives. If you’ve never installed a car seat before, head to a local fire or police station for assistance to ensure that the seat is installed properly and your baby will be safe. Have any needed maintenance done on the car and get a check-up to make sure that your car is running well. Take this time to also clean out and vacuum the car, as finding time to do this when the baby arrives will be difficult. Stock up the car with baby essentials, and maybe even an extra nursing and diaper bag, so that you will know that you have everything you need when on-the-go. (Check out this super cute breast pump bag and bundle by Sarah Wells!)

    10. Stock up on Essentials

Toilet paper, paper towels, and laundry detergent are just some of the items you should have on hand before the baby arrives. Load up on extras of anything your family uses regularly that don’t expire quickly (shampoo, hand soap, dish soap, etc.). For those days when doing dishes seems impossible, you may want to have paper plates and plastic utensils on-hand to make cleanup a cinch. To save even more time, order low-priced items through Amazon Prime Pantry for seamless delivery and the opportunity for subscriptions so you don’t need to worry about reordering!

Completing these 10 to-do items will give you less to worry about when the time comes to meet your new baby. Remember that you don’t have to do all of these on your own – ask for help from your partner, family, or friends, and accept help when it is offered. Congratulations and enjoy getting ready for your new baby!

  • Mom and Baby Customer Care Team Staffed by Certified Lactation Counselors

Mom and Baby Customer Care Team Staffed by Certified Lactation Counselors

Ordering a breast pump through Acelleron Medical Products (AMP) takes three simple steps: place your order, we verify your insurance, you receive your pump. Now, the Mom and Baby Customer Care Specialist (CCS) Team has made this experience even more supportive and individualized.

The majority of the team at Acelleron has obtained the status of Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) through Healthy Children’s Center for Breastfeeding, which states that “CLC certification holders have demonstrated competence in the lactation skills, knowledge and attitudes that are essential to helping women in the United States and have agreed to comply with The Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice code of ethics.”

The CCS team has always had an extensive understanding of the different breast pump options that Acelleron carries. They are now able to combine their thorough understanding of the product line with increased knowledge into lactation. This benefits every mother who calls with questions like:

-What is the best pump for me?
-Why are there so many options?
-How do I use my pump?

Courtney Norberg, processing manager at Acelleron says, “Becoming a CLC has helped me understand new mothers overall. [It] has allowed me to relate to and understand our moms on a more personal level — whether regarding personal issues with feeding or frustration with insurance in the midst of having a newborn.”

Currently, 80 percent of the CCS team has obtained their CLC certification. The entire team is expected to be certified by the end of 2018. This includes any new staff members hired in the next six months.

“Our employees were very excited when we released this news and offered this program,” stated Jason Canzano, managing director. “They felt more supported and better equipped to help our expecting moms with ordering their breast pump, as well as handling any basic breastfeeding questions. Our organization takes pride in its culture, values and customers. We believe employee development is a key component to delivering on all three of those aspects.”
